Why Is Kendamil So Popular?

Kendamil has exploded in popularity among U.S. parents for a few major reasons:

Whole milk base: Unlike most formulas that use skim milk plus added vegetable oils, Kendamil uses whole milk from grass-fed cows, which naturally contains fat and is closer to the fat structure in breast milk.

No palm oil or corn syrup: Kendamil avoids palm oil (which can affect calcium absorption and cause constipation in some babies) and doesn’t use glucose or corn syrup solids as carbohydrate sources.

European quality, now U.S. approved: Many parents have long admired EU formulas for their ingredient standards. Kendamil is one of the few that’s now FDA-reviewed and available in the U.S.

Social media: Kendamil is the formula of choice for the British royal family. Yep, it’s what the royal babies drink.  Not only that, but it is a favorite amongst mom groups and on social media. Many parents swear by Kendamil and let everyone know, too.

Who Makes Kendamil Formula?

Kendamil is made by Kendal Nutricare, a British company based in the Lake District in northern England.

The formula is manufactured entirely in the UK, from sourcing to production.

Kendamil has over 60 years of experience in infant nutrition and proudly emphasizes its commitment to British dairy farms, sustainability, and premium ingredients.

Kendamil was previously only available in Europe and Asia, but U.S. parents could order it via third-party sellers. During the U.S. formula shortage, Kendamil became one of the first international formulas allowed under the FDA’s temporary import program.

Due to its popularity and safety track record, Kendamil formulas are now part of the FDA's expanded enforcement discretion list, meaning they’re allowed for continued distribution in the U.S. with ongoing review.

Is Kendamil Formula FDA Approved in the U.S.?

Yes! Kendamil formulas sold in the U.S. are on the FDA’s list of approved international formulas under its enforcement discretion guidance. This means Kendamil has met key nutritional, manufacturing, and labeling standards required by the FDA.

The specific formulas available in the U.S. (Classic, Organic, Goat, and Toddler) are tailored for FDA compliance, including nutrient levels, iron content, and mixing instructions in English.

That means that all Kendamil formulas on the shelves have been proven to support infant growth and development.

Are There Downsides to Kendamil?

Kendamil has affected by multiple shortages since being offered in the US in 2022. As of April 2025, I have not seen Kendamil Goat in stores or online, resulting in parents having to switch to another formula.

It is unclear to me if Kendamil has the right supply chain and production capacity to support the growing demands.

There is some uncertainty with how the upcoming tariff changes will affect the cost of international formulas.

The risk of starting would be needing to find a new formula if there are shortages.

FAQ About Kendamil Formula

Can I switch to Kendamil from another formula?
Yes! Most babies do well with a direct switch, but gradual transitions may be easier on sensitive tummies. You can try mixing the old and new formula for a few days or make the switch cold turkey.

Is Kendamil suitable for babies with cow’s milk allergy?
No—Kendamil still contains cow’s milk protein. For suspected or diagnosed CMPA, you’ll want to use a hypoallergenic formula like extensively hydrolyzed option.

Does Kendamil contain probiotics?
Kendamil includes prebiotics (GOS), but it does not contain live probiotics. Prebiotics are "food" for good gut bacteria.

How long does an opened tin of Kendamil last?
Once opened, Kendamil should be used within 4 weeks and stored in a cool, dry place (not the fridge). This is the same as other formulas!

What formula is most similar to Kendamil?
Bobbie Whole Milk is closest in terms of European standards, "clean" ingredients and breastmilk-style formulation.

Aussie Bubs Goat is similar to Kendamil Goat in similar featured items.

Does Kendamil have a sensitive or gentle version?
Kendamil does not currently offer a “gentle” or partially hydrolyzed version in the U.S. If your baby has sensitivity to intact cow’s milk protein, another formula may be better. You can also try a goat milk formula.
